Our research is in the area of microelectronic and optoelectronic mateirals and devices with a focus on hybrid integration of optoelectronic and electronic devices, advanced MOSFETs, SiGe devices, process physics modeling and simulations, stress characterization and simulations, and carrier transport.
Qualifications:
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the research, students with a master degree from Materials Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Microelectronics, Applied Physics, Physics or other-related fields are all welcome.
1. GPA ranking above 10 out of 30, with major GPA > 85/100.

Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) is one of the top 3 civil and environmental engineering schools in the US. We are seeking PhD students who are self-motivated in learning new knowledge and technologies and seeking creative idea and solutions, and have strong backgrounds in the following areas:
• Theory and application of signal (image) processing, machine learning, and pattern recognition.
• Theory and application of data mining, statistics, and optimization.
• Development of feature extraction algorithms using digital images and 3D Line Laser Imaging technologies for real-world applications.
• Development of intelligent sensing systems, including using digital camera and 3D Line Laser Imaging. It also involves hardware integration, data synchronization, and calibration.
Our research includes intelligent sensing-based infrastructure condition assessment and management system and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). The research focuses include:
a) development of sensing-based intelligent roadway asset condition assessment, inventory and management systems
• Develop automatic pavement condition evaluation system using downward 2D pavement images and high-resolution 3D Laser data.
• Develop sign asset inventory and management systems by using image- and LiDAR- based feature detection and recognition algorithms.
• Develop automatic roadway geometry extraction (including alignment, super-elevation, slopes, etc.) using images, GPS, and LiDAR data.
b) Intelligent highway workzone hazard awareness system
• Developing the reliable highway work zone intruding vehicle detection and tracking algorithms. Probabilistic-based vehicle intrusion decision models need to be developed.
c) Large-scale Pavement Management System
• Developing spatial optimization and stochastic models to facilitate decision making process on pavement maintenance and rehabilitation at large scale;
Some research projects are described below:
• National-level research project sponsored by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for developing a “Remote-Sensing and GIS-enabled Asset Management System (RS-GAMS).” Different state of the art scanning laser technologies are equipped on an integrated intelligent sensing vehicle. First, 0.5 mm high-resolution downward 3D lasers (Figure 1) will be used to automatically detect pavement distresses (e.g. rutting, cracks, etc.) and measure surface macro-texture in relation to friction, raveling, etc. In addition, the sensing vehicle also collects 3D laser cloud data along with 2D image data (Figure 2). Intelligent signal/image processing algorithms will be developed to automatically detect and recognize roadway assets, including signs, pavement markings, cross slopes, etc. In addition, this pavement data is spatially-referenced using GPS, IMU, GPS, DMI, etc. for spatial data integration. And spatial data fusion methods will be developed to extract features of interest, such as pavement distresses, abnormal maco-texture. It is expected we will analyze pavement texture characteristics at macro level and micro level for developing safe, quiet, smooth, and long-life pavements.
• Research project sponsored by the National Academy of Science (NAS) NCHRP IDEA program on “Development of Sensing System for Highway Workzone Hazard Awareness.” Vehicles detection and tracking algorithms will be developed for developing a reliable highway workzone hazard awareness system. In addition, innovative driver behavior study can be conducted using the vehicle trajectories acquired from automatic vehicle detection and tracking algorithms. A probabilistic model will be also developed to quantify the estimation and prediction uncertainties caused by sensing technology. Study of work zone driver behavior based on vehicle trajectory analysis.
• Research project sponsored by Georgia Logistics Innovation Center to develop a maritime awareness system for automatically detecting and recognizing waterway activities (e.g. containers, vessels, dolphins, environmental problems, etc.) through Savannah Port. In addition, another project is to develop a Savannah congestion mitigation system using the advanced sensing system to optimize city traffic flow.

A graduate student research assistant (GSRA) opening is available for a student to pursue Ph.D. degree at Prof. Jie Lian’ group at Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Nuclear Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute starting from spring or Fall 2012 semester. A post-doc research fellow opportunity is also available immediately. The potential Ph.D. student and post-doc research fellow will work under a multidiscipline team consisted of the scientists from RPI, University of Michigan and DOE Pacific Northwest National Laboratory on the topic of “Radionuclide Incorporation and Long Term Performance of Apatite Waste Forms”. The major goal of this research project is to develop advanced waste form based on the apatite-structure type than can accommodate extreme complex waste stream, the key issue enabling next generation nuclear fuel cycles and waste management technologies. This project is based on a synergized effort of experimental synthesis, characterization and atomic-scale computation in gaining theoretical insights for designing and optimizing various apatite compositions.
RPI’s efforts will mainly focus on (1) materials synthesis of various apatite composites, and structural characterization; (2) effects of surrogate elements for simulating fission products and actinides on the crystal chemistry and phase stability; (3) performance evaluation of designed apatites including micro-chemical and structural evolution under relevant thermal and radiation environments simulated by ion beam techniques. The experimental efforts will be key to design and optimization of apatite based waste forms with enhanced performance, and crucial for the experimental validation of the atomistic scale computation based on DFT and MD. The student and post-doc research fellow will be exposed to a dynamic research environment with multi-disciplinary expertise of advanced materials for nuclear application, ion beam techniques for evaluating radiation performance and leachability testing for evaluating materials chemical durability, and atomic scale computer simulations.
Education backgrounds and research experiences in Materials Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Condensed Matter Physics or Nuclear Engineering are required. Hands-on experiences on the microstructural characterization using TEM, materials synthesis and analysis (e.g., sol-gel, hydrothermal, sparking plasma sintering, solvent extraction) are desirable. It will be a plus if the applicants have previous experiences in studying apatite structure-types and their applications. The duties of the post-doc research fellows include: (1) performing independent research under the scope of advanced materials for energy applications; (2) preparing proposals for funding; (3) training graduate students and (4) disseminating the knowledge through scientific publications or reports.

One of my research directions is microfabrication and MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS). The Dependable Networking and Computing (DNC) Research Group at Wayne State University (a Research-I university, the highest rating issued by the Carnegie Foundation), USA is looking for talented students to join their research program in January 2012 or fall 2012.
The DNC group explores new theories, methods, and systems building-blocks for addressing dynamics and uncertainties in networked systems that involve wireless networks, sensor networks, embedded networks, and the Internet. Presently, with support from the National Science Foundation and industry, they are especially interested in the modeling, algorithmic, and systems issues in wireless, vehicular, sensor, and embedded networks. For instance, with support from the NSF CAREER program and the NSF CPS program, they investigate field-deployable mechanisms for reliable, real-time, and secure wireless networking, and they investigate cross-layer approaches to taming cyber-physical uncertainties in wireless networked sensing and control; as a part of the NSF GENI program, they develop the theoretical and systems foundations for experimentation and service provisioning in federated, networked sensing. Their work has also provided foundational components for several large scale wireless network systems including the NetEye experimental infrastructure (which has 130 IEEE 802.15.4 nodes and 15 802.11b/g nodes) and the DARPA sensornet project ExScal (which, with its 200-node 802.11b mesh network and 1,200-node mote network, was the world's largest wireless sensor network and 802.11b mesh network deployed at its time). By focusing on high-quality research, and by collaborating with other research groups in academia (e.g., Ohio State University, Michigan State University, and The University of Texas-Austin) and industry labs (e.g., Ford Research, GM Research, and Motorola Mobility), the DNC group provides students with access to world-class facilities, real-world experience, and ample opportunities of contributing to the research community. Students in the DNC group will be supported financially in various forms, such as Fellowship, Graduate Research Assistantship, and Graduate Teaching Assistantship. Being in a strong department at an urban research university, students can enjoy a great life experience on campus at the cultural center of Detroit, Michigan. The DNC group is looking for students who have strong academic background, are self-motivated and goal-oriented, and can take initiative in executing research plans. Experience in systems building and mathematical modeling, experience in original research, and/or a Master degree in related fields (e.g., Communication Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, and Electrical Engineering) will be a big plus.
