One PhD position is available immediately in the Department of Materials Engineering at the University of British Columbia, Canada. As a top 40 university in the world, UBC is located in the west coast of Vancouver, which is constantly ranked as the top 3 most livable cities on this planet. Graduate study at UBC will be certainly a rewarding experience.

Our research is in the area of microelectronic and optoelectronic mateirals and devices with a focus on hybrid integration of optoelectronic and electronic devices, advanced MOSFETs, SiGe devices, process physics modeling and simulations, stress characterization and simulations, and carrier transport.

Qualifications:
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the research, students with a master degree from Materials Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Microelectronics, Applied Physics, Physics or other-related fields are all welcome.

1. GPA ranking above 10 out of 30, with major GPA > 85/100.
2. Undergraduate education from the following universities is desired: Tsinghua University, Beijing University, University of Science and Technology of China, Zhejiang, Nanjing, Fudan, Shanghai Jiaotong, Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
3. Course work and research experience on semiconductor materials and devices required.
4. Strong background in physics is a plus.
5. No GRE is required.

Admission procedure:
1) Interested students can send their resumes and scanned transcripts to Dr. Xia;
2) After review, candidates will be interviewed by phone;
3) Qualified student need to take a TOEFL to meet UBC requirements, if they haven’t done so;
4) Student with oral offer need to submit official application to the department of Materials Engineering, indicating that Dr. Xia is the faculty member of interest.
5) Official offer will be issued by the department. Admitted student will be fully financially supported with RA/TA.

The successful applicant is expected to join UBC in Jan 2012.
