The group is developing a vibrant and productive research program focusing on discovering novel electronic and optical properties of metallic and semiconductor nanomaterials and their implications for electronics, photonics, energy, and biomedicine.
A fundamental understanding of the structure-dependent localized optical properties of nanostructures will lead to comprehensive knowledge of the surface plasmon-directed growth of novel anisotropic nanostructures, and design rules for the synthesis and fabrication of hybrid nanostructures with optimized properties for solar energy harvesting, conversion and storage, visible light photocatalysis, chemical and biological detection, drug delivery, and cancer therapeutics. All these projects are high impact and interdisciplinary in nature that combine analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, biomedical engineering, and materials science and engineering.

Different state of the art scanning laser technology will be equipped on a van to collect 3D LiDAR data along with image data that is collected using cameras and infrared ray cameras. Intelligent signal processing and object recognition algorithms will be developed to automatically detect and recognize roadway assets, including signs, guardrails, pavement markings, cross slopes, etc.. In addition, 0.5 mm resolution high-performance downward LiDAR will be used to automatically detect pavement surface macro-texture and construction defects, such as segregation, as well as pavement distresses, including cracks, rutting, raveling, etc. Spatial data integration using GPS, IMU, GPS, DMI, etc. will be applied to integrate different data sources. And spatial data fusion methods will be developed to extract features of interest, such as pavement distresses, abnormal maco-texture. It is expected we will analyze pavement texture characteristics at macro level and then extend to micro and nano levels in the future for developing safe, quiet, smooth, and long-life pavements.

The graph searching approach developed in our group has been demonstrated to be an innovative segmentation method, which impulses us to broaden and deepen the investigation. We are particularly interested in improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the graph searching method. In addition to medical imaging, this research will draw diverse techniques from a number of theoretical areas such as graph algorithms,computational geometry, combinatorial optimization, discrete mathematics, and operations research. This Postdoctoral fellowship provides an opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary team of faculty collaborators across the University with the formation of an Iowa Institute of Biomedical Imaging (IIBI).
The ideal candidate must be highly motivated and has a strong background in computational science, especially in graph algorithms and geometric optimization. Proven ability to work independently and experience in algorithm design, analysis and implementation are considered to be important assets for this position. Interest in Medical Image Analysis is expected. Experience with medical imaging is a preferable plus. The candidate is also expected to be willing to work in a cross-disciplinary environment. This project is a continuation of our most recent developments in the field of time delay systems and control theory, and it involves both theoretical and experimental work. Successful candidate will have strong background on control theory, dynamic systems and mathematics; he/she is required to have a Master’s degree in a field (including but not limited to engineering, physics, applied mathematics) relevant to the scope of the project; he/she has excellent skills in using Matlab, Simulink and a symbolic manipulator (e.g. Mathematica, Maple, Matlab’s Symbolic toolbox). It is also desirable that the candidate has hands-on experience on feedback control, and theoretical background on Model Predictive Control, Graph Theory and Differential Equations. It is expected that the candidates have excellent GRE and TOEFL (if necessary) scores, and they have strong communication and writing skills. Laboratory (DUSEL) potentially sited at Homestake Mine in South Dakota. The
main foci of CUBED are to produce super clean materials through crystal growth
and purification of noble gases, and to develop low background counting
capabilities underground for future DUSEL projects. LUX and DEAP/CLEAN are
aimed at detecting dark matter using noble liquid scintillators and Majorana is
targeted at determining absolute neutrino mass through the neutrinoless double-
beta decay process.
The successful candidates are expected to participate in the activities of
CUBED, to play a major role in physics simulations, next generation detector
development, crystal growth, material purification, detector design, and to
assist in the construction of an Ultra-Low Background Counting Facility at
Homestake. We anticipate that this position will require frequent travel to,
and extended stays at the Homestake Underground Laboratory in Lead, South
Dakota.
