The University of Agder invites applications for a full-time fixed-term appointment as PhD Research Fellow in ICT/mobile communication for a period of three years, at the Department of Information and Communication Technology, Faculty of Engineering and Science. The position is located in Grimstad, Norway. The starting date is negotiable.
The position is intended to address energy efficiency problems in green ICT. Potential research topics for the PhD study include:
* Investigation of energy consumption factors in WLANs and multi-hop wireless networks
* Design of energy-aware MAC and routing protocols in multi-hop cooperative and cognitive radio networks
* Performance evaluation of energy-efficient access mechanisms and protocols in wireless networks
The position is remunerated within the State salary scale, salary plan 17.515, code 1017, salary grade 45 (NOK 355.600). A 2 % compulsory pension contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund is deducted from the pay according to current statutory provisions.

Different state of the art scanning laser technology will be equipped on a van to collect 3D LiDAR data along with image data that is collected using cameras and infrared ray cameras. Intelligent signal processing and object recognition algorithms will be developed to automatically detect and recognize roadway assets, including signs, guardrails, pavement markings, cross slopes, etc.. In addition, 0.5 mm resolution high-performance downward LiDAR will be used to automatically detect pavement surface macro-texture and construction defects, such as segregation, as well as pavement distresses, including cracks, rutting, raveling, etc. Spatial data integration using GPS, IMU, GPS, DMI, etc. will be applied to integrate different data sources. And spatial data fusion methods will be developed to extract features of interest, such as pavement distresses, abnormal maco-texture. It is expected we will analyze pavement texture characteristics at macro level and then extend to micro and nano levels in the future for developing safe, quiet, smooth, and long-life pavements.

[CA]Masters/PhD opportunities in microfluidics
The Multi-scale Design Laboratory, at the University of British Columbia in Canada, works at the intersection of engineering, physics,and biology to develop enabling technologies for medicine. We are currently working on new microfluidic mechanisms for cell sorting. In collaboration with researchers in medicine, we are applying these mechanisms to isolate circulating cancer cells from the blood of cancer patients. Recently, we have also received funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to apply our technology to develop alow-cost device to detect malaria infection in low-resource regions.

A PhD position is immediately available on CONTROLLING NON-LINEAR SYSTEMS UNDER DELAY CONSTRAINTS under the supervision of Prof. Rifat Sipahi at the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Northeastern University located in the heart of Boston.
This project is a continuation of our most recent developments in the field of time delay systems and control theory, and it involves both theoretical and experimental work. Successful candidate will have strong background on control theory, dynamic systems and mathematics; he/she is required to have a Master’s degree in a field (including but not limited to engineering, physics, applied mathematics) relevant to the scope of the project; he/she has excellent skills in using Matlab, Simulink and a symbolic manipulator (e.g. Mathematica, Maple, Matlab’s Symbolic toolbox). It is also desirable that the candidate has hands-on experience on feedback control, and theoretical background on Model Predictive Control, Graph Theory and Differential Equations. It is expected that the candidates have excellent GRE and TOEFL (if necessary) scores, and they have strong communication and writing skills. 2 Ph.D positions (4 years) in bone regeneration: development of novel materials and high-throughput screening of their biological performance
Job description
The department of Tissue Regeneration at the MIRA Institute for Biomedical Technology and Technical Medicine, University of Twente (The TR department) is dedicated to develop new strategies for the treatment of bone and cartilage defects. Recently, our lab developed synthetic osteo-inductive ceramics, materials which are able to actively stimulate bone regeneration and which are now clinically evaluated as alternative for autologous bone grafting. Fueled by this, we are currently developing a new generation of inductive ceramics by further improving the inductive potential as well as the handling and mechanical properties.
In this project we are looking for two PhD students. One student will engage in development of a family of novel biomaterials, by modifying their physico-chemical properties and by the preparation of composites of ceramics and polymers. The other student will set up a high throughput screening system to evaluate the bone forming capacity of ceramics in vitro. Micro-array technology will be used to assess the biological response of stem cells to ceramics and be correlated to their ability to induce bone formation in animal models using bio-informatic analysis.
Requirements
We are now recruiting two PhD students. One candidate should have a Master’s degree in chemistry or engineering and affinity with biomaterials and orthopaedics. The other candidate, with a biomedical background should be keen to apply molecular biology to solve a medical problem. Expertise in bio-informatics is recommended.
Outstanding knowledge of scientific English both in speaking and in reading is required.
