Metro-Access and Short Range Communication Systems Group
Vision: Photonics, electronics, digital signal processing, microwave and sensor technologies synergistically interacting will become the modern telecommunication infrastructure connecting the end-user to the world and bringing the world into the personal area network.

Research: the scope of our activities is driven by the challenges facing the global telecommunication network of the future to cope with the increasing demand for instant, reliable, any time, anywhere and affordable delivery of broadband services directly to the end-user. In the search for solutions to those challenges, we pursue research in topics spanning transparent interfacing between the core/metropolitan and access area network segments, high capacity access (wavelength division multiplexing –passive optical networks: WDM-PON) technologies, converged signal generation, detection and transport of wireless or wireline signals all the way long from the metro to the indoor (in-home) environment.

Our ongoing research activities can be grouped along the following tracks:
Coherent detection systems supported by DSP techniques for 100 Gbit/s, 400 Gbit/s and beyond systems
High capacity wireless-over-fiber transmission and access systems
Universal digital signal processing (DSP) receiver structures for optical communications
Equalization and error correction techniques
Converged wireline and wireless broadband access network
Techniques and technologies for metro-access interfacing nodes
Cognitive performance and quality of transmission monitoring techniques for advanced modulation and transmission systems
Photonic technologies and techniques for high capacity, narrowly spaced WDM access systems
High capacity short range networking over multimode and polymer fibres for wireless and wireline signals
High speed, high carrier frequency, short range wireless communications links
In-home networking

We foster close cooperation links with other research groups in DTU Fotonik and at other research institutions world wide. Currently, the group has attracted funded research projects from the Danish research council, European Commission FP7, Danish private foundations and DTU scholarships schemes.

Our group has attracted researchers from a wide range of cultural backgrounds to create a dynamic and enthusiastic research environment. Our team members have educational and cultural backgrounds from Denmark, Russia, Colombia, South Africa, China, Jamaica, Australia, and The Netherlands.

The Mathematics Department at MIT invites applications for one postdoctoral position in the area of computational mathematics.

This position is part of an industry-sponsored effort to solve inverse problems in seismology. Prefer ence will be given to candidates who have a strong background in some of the following areas: numerical methods for partial differential equations, optimization, C or Fortran programming, parallel programming, and seismology.

[US]Postdoc Positions available in ECE at UIowa

Opening for a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, USA starting in the fall of 2009.

Our research group is looking for a talented researcher whose responsibilities would primarily include the research and development of a novel graph searching method for medical image segmentation. The graph searching approach developed in our group has been demonstrated to be an innovative segmentation method, which impulses us to broaden and deepen the investigation. We are particularly interested in improving the effectiveness and efficiency of the graph searching method. In addition to medical imaging, this research will draw diverse techniques from a number of theoretical areas such as graph algorithms,computational geometry, combinatorial optimization, discrete mathematics, and operations research. This Postdoctoral fellowship provides an opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary team of faculty collaborators across the University with the formation of an Iowa Institute of Biomedical Imaging (IIBI).

The ideal candidate must be highly motivated and has a strong background in computational science, especially in graph algorithms and geometric optimization. Proven ability to work independently and experience in algorithm design, analysis and implementation are considered to be important assets for this position. Interest in Medical Image Analysis is expected. Experience with medical imaging is a preferable plus. The candidate is also expected to be willing to work in a cross-disciplinary environment. Good communication as well as writing skills is desirable. Applicants should hold a Ph.D.in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field.

The position is for one year in the first instance and has the potential to be extended for up to four years for suitably qualified candidates if skills, interest and performance allow. This position is immediately available and will start at a mutually agreed upon date. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply.

The Lab of biodegradation in the department of Bioproduct and Biosystem Engineering of UMN have two openings for one master student and one Phd or Post Doc.

The master student will work on fungi competition in wood decomposition. Related work includes using molecular method to quantify specific fungi in wood.

The PhD or Post Doc will work on brown rot fungi and their potential in biotechnology. Major work would be on specific enzyme dynamic related to cellulose and lignin decomposition.

[US](PHY)Postdoc position in Univ South Dakota

Postdoctoral Research Position
2010 DUSEL Research Center for Ultra-Low Background Experiments (CUBED) at
Sanford Lab/DUSEL

The South Dakota 2010 DUSEL Research Center (CUBED) at The University of South
Dakota invites applications for two postdoctoral research associates in
experimental particle/nuclear physics and material science to begin in January
2010 and July 2010.

The successful candidates will participate in the 2010 DUSEL Research Center
activities and in the LUX, Majorana, and DEAP/CLEAN collaborations; and will
conduct research associated with a Deep Underground Science and Engineering
Laboratory (DUSEL) potentially sited at Homestake Mine in South Dakota. The
main foci of CUBED are to produce super clean materials through crystal growth
and purification of noble gases, and to develop low background counting
capabilities underground for future DUSEL projects. LUX and DEAP/CLEAN are
aimed at detecting dark matter using noble liquid scintillators and Majorana is
targeted at determining absolute neutrino mass through the neutrinoless double-
beta decay process.

The successful candidates are expected to participate in the activities of
CUBED, to play a major role in physics simulations, next generation detector
development, crystal growth, material purification, detector design, and to
assist in the construction of an Ultra-Low Background Counting Facility at
Homestake. We anticipate that this position will require frequent travel to,
and extended stays at the Homestake Underground Laboratory in Lead, South
Dakota.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. or equivalent in experimental particle and/or
nuclear physics, or material sciences, hardware experience, and experience with
Linux/UNIX, C++ and object-oriented programming.

General Summary (Purpose) of Position
The purpose of this Post-Doctoral Research Associate is to work closely with
faculty, other post-docs, graduate and undergraduate students engaged in re
search to study the optical fiber sensors, including biosensors, acoustic/pr
essure sensors, and miniature nanofiber sensors. The appointment is for 1.5
years initially, can be extended to a longer term subject to the availabilit
y of funds.

Duties:

1. Provide support for research efforts by:
o Design, development, construction, and measurement of optical fiber sensor
s, biosensors and special optical waveguide, circuits, integration systems,
and devices.
o Analysis of applications of designed/fabricated nanostructures.
o Development of simulation models for tapered fibers, nanofibers, or specia
l waveguide structures.
o Supervise graduate students, provide guidance and leadership.
o Maintaining written and stored records about progress and process of resea
rch performed.
o Writing monthly charts and quarterly progress reports.
o Participating in preparing new research proposals for funding.
o Preparing manuscripts for publication.

materials characterization, and excellent hands-on skills and experience in
MEMS experiments are highly desirable.
o Ability and interest to pursue challenging, interdisciplinary problems, an
d good communication and organizational skills.
o Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
o Ability to work independently, and demonstrate creativity.
o Ability to travel locally and nationally as needed.
