The Multi-scale Design Laboratory, at the University of British Columbia in Canada, works at the intersection of engineering, physics,and biology to develop enabling technologies for medicine. We are currently working on new microfluidic mechanisms for cell sorting. In collaboration with researchers in medicine, we are applying these mechanisms to isolate circulating cancer cells from the blood of cancer patients. Recently, we have also received funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to apply our technology to develop alow-cost device to detect malaria infection in low-resource regions.
We are looking for creative and motivated students to join our group as masters/PhD students. Students with backgrounds in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Applied Physics are welcome.
Previous experience in microfabrication, electronics design, and fluid mechanics, as well as hands-on research experience would be an asset. Potential start dates in January 2010 or Summer 2010.

Prof. Park’s current research focuses on the broad theme of development and
application of both atomistic and multiscale computational models to
investigate surface effects on the properties and behavior of metallic and
semiconducting nanomaterials. In particular, his current research projects
are: (1) Investigating surface effects on the coupled physics behavior of
nanomaterials, including thermomechanical, electromechanical, and
optomechanical. (2) Investigating the mechanics of novel
nanomaterials such as graphene.
Students with strong backgrounds in applied mathematics, numerical
methods (finite element methods), solid mechanics and physics (including
optics, quantum mechanics and electrodynamics) are especially encouraged to
