Ph.D. opportunities in ME @ CU-Boulder

I am currently accepting applications for two Ph.D. students starting in Spring or Fall 2012. The students will join my research group (http://www.colorado.edu/MCEN/people/faculty/xiao.html) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Colorado Boulder.

One of my research directions is microfabrication and MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS). The goal of this research is to create Stretchable/Flexible Electronics, a novel format electronic system that can be stretched, bent, twisted and folded. Stretchable/Flexible Electronics can have very broad applications that are impossible for hard, planar integrated circuits that exist today. Examples range from smart medical devices, flexible display, to soft robotics, structural health monitors and inspection systems.

Another one is mechanics of nanomaterials, to study the adhesion and deformation of nanotubes and graphenes on silicon and quartz substrates, for their applications in advanced nanoelectronics and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS). This project will utilize both analytical and numerical methods to reveal the fundamental mechanics and physics in nanoscale systems.

Prospective students should have strong background in Engineering Mechanics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related disciplines. Students with a Master degree are especially encouraged to apply.

If you are interested, please contact: Jianliang.Xiao@colorado.edu, with your CV, a copy of transcript, and the contact information of 3 references. The application deadline for Fall 2012 is Nov 11. For possibilities of starting in Spring 2012, please contact me directly. More details of the application procedure can be found at http://www.colorado.edu/MCEN/programs/graduate/prospective/index.html

Ph.D. positions in Wireless Networking

The Dependable Networking and Computing (DNC) Research Group at Wayne State University (a Research-I university, the highest rating issued by the Carnegie Foundation), USA is looking for talented students to join their research program in January 2012 or fall 2012.

The DNC group explores new theories, methods, and systems building-blocks for addressing dynamics and uncertainties in networked systems that involve wireless networks, sensor networks, embedded networks, and the Internet. Presently, with support from the National Science Foundation and industry, they are especially interested in the modeling, algorithmic, and systems issues in wireless, vehicular, sensor, and embedded networks. For instance, with support from the NSF CAREER program and the NSF CPS program, they investigate field-deployable mechanisms for reliable, real-time, and secure wireless networking, and they investigate cross-layer approaches to taming cyber-physical uncertainties in wireless networked sensing and control; as a part of the NSF GENI program, they develop the theoretical and systems foundations for experimentation and service provisioning in federated, networked sensing. Their work has also provided foundational components for several large scale wireless network systems including the NetEye experimental infrastructure (which has 130 IEEE 802.15.4 nodes and 15 802.11b/g nodes) and the DARPA sensornet project ExScal (which, with its 200-node 802.11b mesh network and 1,200-node mote network, was the world's largest wireless sensor network and 802.11b mesh network deployed at its time). For more information about their research, please visit the website of Prof. Hongwei Zhang at http://www.cs.wayne.edu/~hzhang/.

By focusing on high-quality research, and by collaborating with other research groups in academia (e.g., Ohio State University, Michigan State University, and The University of Texas-Austin) and industry labs (e.g., Ford Research, GM Research, and Motorola Mobility), the DNC group provides students with access to world-class facilities, real-world experience, and ample opportunities of contributing to the research community. Students in the DNC group will be supported financially in various forms, such as Fellowship, Graduate Research Assistantship, and Graduate Teaching Assistantship. Being in a strong department at an urban research university, students can enjoy a great life experience on campus at the cultural center of Detroit, Michigan. (On a related note, The Scientist has recently ranked WSU as one of the best academic institutions to work in USA.)

The DNC group is looking for students who have strong academic background, are self-motivated and goal-oriented, and can take initiative in executing research plans. Experience in systems building and mathematical modeling, experience in original research, and/or a Master degree in related fields (e.g., Communication Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, and Electrical Engineering) will be a big plus.

If you are interested in joining the DNC group as a Ph.D. student to conduct high-quality research, please feel free to contact Prof. Hongwei Zhang (http://www.cs.wayne.edu/~hzhang/) and share with him your background, career plan, and expectations for Ph.D. study. Prof. Zhang will call or email you if there is a good match between you and his group.
