The Multi-scale Design Laboratory, at the University of British Columbia in Canada, works at the intersection of engineering, physics, and biology to develop enabling technologies for medicine. We are currently working on new microfluidic mechanisms for cell sorting. In collaboration with researchers in medicine, we are applying these mechanisms to isolate circulating cancer cells from the blood of cancer patients. Recently, we have also received funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to apply our technology to develop alow-cost device to detect malaria infection in low-resource regions.
We are looking for creative and motivated students to join our group as masters/PhD students. Students with backgrounds in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Applied Physics are welcome.
Previous experience in microfabrication, electronics design, and fluid mechanics, as well as hands-on research experience would be an asset. Potential start dates in January 2010 or Summer 2010.
