PhD Positions Available@ECE.UMN

To U. of Minnesota Grad Students in Computing:

Prof. Lilja and I are ramping up research work in the area of peer-to-peer storage systems and we have several RA positions available immediately. This work aims to improve the state-of-the-art in peer-to-peer-like storage clusters that can self-organize to achieve high performance, scalability, and low-maintenance overhead. These clusters will likely be deployed in some of the largest computers on the planet.

Significant prior research in this area has been performed at the U. of California at Santa Barbara, as part of the Sorrento p2p storage cluster project:

We are looking for students with significant programming experience in distributed systems, file systems, p2p architectures, and networking. We anticipate this project will stretch over 3 to 4 years and will involve the potential for several interesting Ph.D. and M.S. thesis projects.

One Research Fellow/Engineer Position in the Institute for Infocomm Research, Singapore

One Research Fellow or Research Engineer position is available in the
Networking Protocols Department, Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R),
Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star), Singapore.

The recruited staff will work in a project to develop mesh network
supported indoor localization algorithms, protocols and system by
integrating wireless localization and inertial sensing (e.g., by using
accelerometer).

The applicator should have good knowledge and experience in at least one
of the areas of wireless localization algorithms (e.g., fingerprinting
algorithms), target tracking algorithms (e.g., Bayesian, Kalman or
Particle filtering), and wireless mesh network MAC/routing protocol
design, analysis and implementation. Good background in mathematical
optimization is an advantage. He/she should have a PhD or Master degree
with good Journal or conference publications.

Two Ph.D. student positions in large-scale communication systems at KTH Royal Institute of Technology

We invite applications for research and graduate studies towards the degree
of Doctor of Philosophy that center around the following topics.


. Network Search-providing Google-like search functions for operational and
configuration data in networks and networked systems
. Autonomous resource management for data centers and large-scale clouds


The positions will be with the Network Management group at the Laboratory
for Communication Networks (LCN). The group has a strong track record in
scalable management of networked systems, and it maintains a network of
collaborations, both within KTH and internationally. The successful
candidates will join the ACCESS LINNAEUS Centre that conducts research
towards future networked systems (www.access.kth.se).

A Ph.D. student position at KTH extends over a maximum of five years and
includes 80% time for research and 20% for department duties, typically
teaching.

The starting dates for the positions are planned for the second quarter of
2010.

Qualifications:
We seek highly motivated individuals holding an M.Sc. degree in computer
science, electrical engineering, or a related area. An applicant must have
excellent academic credentials, a well-documented background in
communication or computing (preferably both), and a proven interest in
applying theoretical results from science and engineering to creating novel
technology. Expertise in some of the following areas is required:
networking, distributed algorithms, stochastic processes, protocol modeling
and analysis, software engineering.

Postdoctoral Researcher Position in P2P Networking and Wireless Networking (USA)

The Computer Networks Lab in the Department of Systems and Computer
Science at Howard University (Washington, DC, USA) seeks applications
for a full-time postdoctoral researcher position starting immediately.

The term is one year. The postdoc is expected to conduct P2P experiments
on PlanetLab and mobile wireless network experiments using a wireless
emulator.

Requirements for candidates:
1. A Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or
Electrical Engineering.
2. Strong computer networking research experience in related areas.
Familiarity with P2P-SIP is a plus.
3. Strong programming experience in C/C++ and Java.
4. Familiarity with Linux/Unix and shell scripting. Experience on
PlanetLab/Emulab or similar testbeds is a plus.
5. Good verbal and written skills in English.

The ACCESS Linnaeus Center at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH),
Stockholm, Sweden, invites applications from outstanding candidates for
postdoctoral research positions. ACCESS is one of Europe's largest
university research centers in networked systems. 35 faculty/senior
researchers and 80 PhD students develop a fundamental understanding and
engineering principles for designing self-managed and scalable networks
and systems in which applications may share real-time information and
cooperate in an efficient and reliable manner.

Candidates should have a PhD (or be near completion) in a relevant field
and a strong research and publication record.

The duration of the position is 12 months and may be extended by an
additional 12 months. The starting date is during fall 2010.

a) Protocol and service engineering
