Georgia Institute of Technology Electric Power Group Recruting
Dear prospective students:
I am a Tsinghua Alumna and graduated with my PhD degree from the Electric Power Group at Georgia Institute of Technology. Because of the continuous excellent performance of Chinese students in this group during recent years, our professors have showed great interests in recruiting students from Tsinghua University and other top Chinese universities. They have requested me to help them recruit top students targeting for Fall 2010.
Georgia Tech is one of the nation's toppest research univeristies, particularly engaged in advancing engineering and technology. The main campus is located in Atlanta, the heart of the southeast state with a large Chinese community. Three remote campus are in Savannah Georgia, Lorraine France, and Shanghai China. Georgia Tech's graduate engineering program ranks top 5 and with electrical engineering ranks no.5 by the US World Report. The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering is the largest ECE department in the nation with 10 technical areas, more than 130 full-time professors, 5 NAE members, and 32 IEEE Fellows. The Electric Power Group is one of the best in the state with 7 professors, 6 being IEEE fellows. Their research areas span from traditional areas such as electrical machines, power electrics, power systems to emerging areas such as smart grid, renewable energy, etc.
This recruiting request is sent specially from the following two professors who work very closely together.
Dr. Ronald Harley, Professor, IEEE Fellow, http://www.ece.gatech.edu/faculty-staff/fac_profiles/bio.php?id=43
- Power system stability and control, including Flexible AC Systems (FACTS)devices
- Power electronics, motor drives and electric vehicles
- Neural networks applied to power electronics and electrical machines
Dr. Thomas Habetler, Professor, IEEE Fellow, http://www.ece.gatech.edu/faculty-staff/fac_profiles/bio.php?id=41
- Current-based condition monitoring of electric machines
- Control of electric machine drives
- Power electronics
- Design and protection of electric machines
Financial Assistantships: > $1,600/month for 12 months, > $1900/month for 12 months after PhD preliminary exam. Plus full tuition waiver.
Required and Preferred Background:
1) Must show STRONG interests in any of the above research areas and STRONGLY committed to completion of a PhD degree.
2) Must have proven excellent coursework record in power electronics, machines, power systems, and advanced mathematics (at least top 20% in the department).
3) Must have demonstrated excellent research and self-study ability through research-oriented projects. Publications in either English or Chinese are a big plus.
3) If target for Fall 2010, applicants must have already submitted complete application materials and met the school deadlines.
4) Must speak GOOD spoken English.
5) Must be familiar with Matlab/Simulink. Good experience in FEA, analog/digital circuit design, Labview/NI data acquisition tools, and strong programming skills are a plus.
6) Applicants with incoming MS degree are strongly preferred. However, undergraduates with exceptional coursework record and research experience are also encouraged.
7) A relatively diversified background in controls, signal processing, intelligent methods, sensors, or related area is a plus.
8) Previous research experience in neural networks (applied to electric systems), electric machines condition monitoring (diagnostics & prognostics), and renewable energy is a big plus.
If you are both interested and qualified, please send your most recent resume (with phone number), transcripts, and any other useful supporting materials to me DIRECTLY at Dr. Bin Lu ( binlu@ieee.org ). For the sake of the most responsive processing, please DO NOT send your materials directly to the professors. After reviewing the materials, selected candidates will be phone interviewed.

英国爱丁堡大学 Principal's Career Development PhD Scholarships
Here is another oppertunity for good students. If she/he would like to apply it, I will help them. He/she should mention that I will supervise his/her study.
详细介绍:
Principal's Career Development PhD Scholarships
The University of Edinburgh will offer almost 60 PhD scholarships for students starting their PhD research at the University in the 2010-2011 academic session. The awards are open to UK, EU and overseas students undertaking a research degree and may be held in any field of
study.
In order to attract the best and brightest PhD students, the University of Edinburgh seeks to offer not only unparalleled research facilities and superb supervision, but also to provide development opportunities which will support our research students as they progress beyond their PhD, through an innovative programme of integrated research, training and career development.
This exciting new scholarship scheme provides a valuable opportunity for postgraduate research students to undertake a package of training and development which will help them to develop the necessary skills required to meet their career choices, and offer them a breadth of
development opportunities in areas such as teaching, public engagement, entrepreneurship, and research.
Teaching
Most Career Development PhD scholars will be expected to undertake some undergraduate teaching which may be in the region of 180 hours per academic session. The level of teaching contribution will vary among the disciplines, and other associated tasks such as marking or
demonstrating, with some lecturing experience towards the end of the three years may also form part of the scholarship.
Public Engagement
Scholars may be required to engage with the public, disseminating and promoting the university's research. This might include giving public talks; seeking public input into your research; or working with science centres or museums. Such activities will help to encourage a
greater understanding about the issues and possibilities that develop from research.
Entrepreneurship
Looking at new ways of encouraging innovative approaches to the utilization of research may also be suitable for some scholars. This might include being introduced to such areas as intellectual property and patents, learning how to set up a business or spin-out company, as
well as business and industrial placements.
Research
As well as developing your own research project, you may contribute to ongoing research within your subject area in another part of the University. There may be opportunities to act as a research assistant, participate in some of the crucial background work of journal editing,
or prepare briefings and materials for publications and presentations in our Schools, Colleges and Support Groups.
Value of Award
Each scholarship will cover the UK/EU rate of tuition fee (c. ?3,500 in 2010-2011) as well as a stipend which will increase each year. In 2010-2011 the level of stipend will be ?13,500; in 2011-2012 this will increase to ?14,000; and in year 3 the level will be ?14,500. Subject
to satisfactory progress, the awards are tenable for up to three years.
UK and EU applicants should apply as normal to the relevant UK Research Council, while overseas students should apply to the Scottish Overseas Research Students Award Scheme (SORSAS) as well as to other external sources of funding. Successful candidates who receive other sources of partial funding will have the value of their Career Development PhD Scholarship altered accordingly.
Eligibility
Applicants must have already applied for admission to a full-time PhD research programme of study at the University of Edinburgh. They must be of outstanding academic merit and research potential. Candidates must have, or expect to obtain, a UK first class or 2:1 Honours degree
at undergraduate level or the international equivalent. Other factors such as financial status, nationality and the proposed field of study are not taken into account. The University of Edinburgh will not generally consider candidates who have already obtained a PhD, or
formal equivalent, as a result of direct research training. Candidates are required to have good English Language skills with scholarship applicants normally requiring a minimum IELTS of 7.0.
Please also note that if you have applied for consecutive registration where you will start your Master's programme of study in 2010 and your PhD the following year in 2011, that you will not be eligible to apply for a Principal's Career Development Scholarship in 2010. Principal's awards cannot be held concurrently with fully-funded scholarships but can be held with partial awards such as Scottish Overseas Research Students Award Scheme (SORSAS) awards.
Application Procedure
Applicants should apply for PhD admission before applying for a Principal's Career Development Scholarship. Your scholarship application cannot be considered until you have applied for
postgraduate admission.
Application for postgraduate admission should be made via the University?s on-line admission system. Application is made via the University?s Prospectus at www.ed.ac.uk/studying/postgraduate/finder.Eligible applicants should also complete an online scholarship application.
